I was surprised to be asked by Jeanette if I'd like to go to the opening night of the Boy From Oz... because she had asked Melanie, and when she couldn't go, Melanie recommended me as someone who liked to go to shows. She had been asked because Nick didn't want to go... (thanks Nick and Jeanette!)
I was surprised to find that we could park under Rod Laver Arena, and the tickets included dinner in the Davis Cup Room, which we entered via lift from the carpark.
I was surprised to find that when we left dinner to go to the show, a door opened from the Davis Cup Room right into Rod Laver Arena. Wow! I guess I shouldn't have been surprised to find that our seats were fantastic...
I was surprised at the magnitude of the production (for an Aussie production), the fantastic costumes and sets (especially the white grand piano entering from the roof, with Peter Allen atop!).
I was even surprised by the performances. Hugh Jackman was an absolute knockout as Peter Allen, and had him nailed right from the outset... Chrissie Amphlett as Judy Garland, Colleen Hewitt as his mum, Angela Toohey as Liza Minella - all wonderful.
I was surprised at how patriotic I felt when he sang I Still Call Australia Home.
I was surprised by the sheer exuberance of I Go To Rio.
And, although I knew some of his songs, I was surprised at the breath of Peter Allen's work, how personally related to him his songs are, and, especially in this age of trash, how meaningful the lyrics are to us all.
He created art, and it came from within... and I was lucky enough to experience just a little of it.
